Why We Chose a 20:1 Dilution Ratio for Our Luxury Dog Shampoo

Why We Chose a 20:1 Dilution Ratio for Our Luxury Dog Shampoo

In the grooming industry, high dilution ratios are often marketed as a sign of value. You may see shampoos promoted at 50:1 or even 60:1 and assume that higher automatically means better.

But when formulating a truly premium shampoo, dilution ratio is about far more than how many bottles a concentrate can produce.

We chose a balanced 20:1 dilution ratio because our priority has always been coat condition, skin health, and ingredient performance, and not inflated dilution claims.

The Difference Between a "Value" Shampoo and a Treatment-Focused Formula

At extremely high dilution ratios, a shampoo concentrate must rely heavily on strong surfactants and detergents to maintain cleansing power once diluted. The result is a formula increasingly dominated by cleansing agents, leaving little room for the ingredients that genuinely support the coat and skin. Which are conditioning systems, proteins, botanical extracts, humectants, and skin-supportive actives.

A 20:1 concentration allows for a more balanced formulation structure. It gives space for premium ingredients without compromising stability, performance, or coat feel.

Why This Matters for Coat Quality

One of the most noticeable differences is the finish left on the coat after bathing.

Ultra-high dilution shampoos can leave the coat feeling overly stripped or excessively squeaky - which may initially feel clean, but is not always ideal for long-term coat condition. A more balanced concentration supports a richer conditioning system, leaving the coat softer, more manageable, and easier to dry and style without heaviness.

For professional groomers and coat specialists, final texture and integrity matter just as much as cleansing performance. A coat that looks clean but feels compromised is not the result we are after.

A More Skin-Conscious Approach

The skin beneath the coat is just as important as the coat itself.

A moderate dilution ratio allows for better support of moisture retention, skin barrier function, and sensitive skin compatibility. This becomes particularly important for puppies, dogs on frequent grooming schedules, and those with reactive or compromised skin.

Our philosophy has always been that grooming products should support overall coat and skin wellness, not simply strip away dirt. The two things are not the same, and the difference shows over time.

Consistency in Professional Use

In real salon environments, consistency matters enormously.

A 20:1 dilution ratio is easier to measure accurately, more predictable across different coat types, and less likely to be under-dosed during a busy day. That reliability is something experienced groomers genuinely value. They need dependable results, coat after coat, this is what builds a reputation.

True Luxury Is About Performance

Headline dilution ratios can sound impressive from a marketing perspective, but they do not automatically indicate a superior shampoo. Experienced groomers and coat specialists evaluate products based on ingredient quality, coat finish, skin response, rinse-ability, and long-term condition, it is not about the number on the label.

For us, luxury grooming is about performance, balance, and care. Creating products that respect both the skin and the coat while delivering exceptional results.

Because a shampoo should do far more than simply clean.
